Bitter Cold Will Come to the Country

We will start seeing the bitterly cold temperatures moving south from the polar vortex shortly, and here's how:

1. A persistant ridge in the far northern Hemisphere will eventually obliterate the crucial low pressure systems that make the polar vortex what it is.
2. The Alaskan Low will break down, replaced by a strong ridge. This ridge will lead to a favorable pattern for storms in the Eastern US, where winter weather has been virtually nonexistent.
3. The Sudden Stratospheric Warming event has put on what may come to be an irreversible effect on the stratosphere. Even right now, we are seeing the EP Flux indicator suddenly strengthen, indicating that warm air is once again making a push at the stratosphere.

Andrew, how cold, if you know, could northern Illinois get? Thanks.

when the pattern flips for good how long will the cold air stay in detroit like from mid-jan-Feb and even into march?

Hopefully this happens, still don't think that it will get as cold as most people are saying. Just don't see it happening in this winter. Sun angle in February starts to warm the ground and will not be favorable for snow to stick around long. Just been a horrible winter so far. Every storm is rain. Hope it changes, but I have my doubts. Best to not expect much and be surprised if you get a big snowstorm, rather than having high hopes for snow and being really dissapointed at the end of the season if you get very little snow.

Hello Andrew. When do you see the pattern change to begin? Also, when the pattern does change, when do you see the big snows start affecting the eastern half of the country? Thanks.

I think the most snow will fall around the great lakes when the artic air comes for the rest of the winter. The rest of the country will probably be spared from any snowstorms.

It doesn't show Charllote in snow because it is not supposed to snow that much there.Simple explanation.

I'M GETTING SICK AND TIRED OF THE RUDE COMMENTS DIRECTED AT ANDREW HOW HE FORECASTS!! IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE WAY HE FORECASTS,GO TO ANOTHER SITE!! FORECASTING IS NOT AN EASY THING TO DO.I MYSELF ENJOY COMING HERE DAILY.WHEN I POST A QUESTION,HE ANSWERS IT PROMPTLY.HE CANNOT CONTROL WHEN & WHERE IT IS GOING TO SNOW,HE ONLY IS THE MESSENGER.

Andrew said...

LJ: I cannot predict it that far out, but it would get at least decently cold.

Eddie: Likely into March.

Anonymous #1: I agree on the snow portion, but believe that there is still winter to be salvaged yet.

Mike: The pattern change is in the very beginning of it's stages. Yes, when it does happen, snow will start to fall.

Anonymous #2: I agree.

Peterbilt5000: It is coming. Be patient.

I have been a big promoter of how everyone is entitled to their own opinions. If you think my blog is horrible, so be it. It doesn't change how I will post. I want everyone to know that it doesn't matter what bad comments may come up- weather is weather, and I will continue to post as such.

I agree with Mike.Meteorologists predict not control.

I imagine this could cause LAKE EFFCT SNOW on lake Michigan and the other great lakes when the cold comes down off the GREAT LAKES.

Good morning Andrew! I checked the instantweathermaps.com site and the twisterdata.com sites and it shows snow cover from Indiana all the way to the east coast.Do you think this could be a potential timeframe for a storm?Just a guess.Thanks.

Andrew said...

AJ: You are correct.

Mike: With the pattern change only beginning to start, the models will start to get more turbulent than normal. That's when we turn to the ensembles. For right now, I could eventually see that snow happening.

Hi Andrew.Do you think the Ohio valley couldsee some decent snow the second half of winter?I saw the post on the left hand side.

Mike: Check this out: http://theweathercentre.blogspot.com/2012/01/soi-values-suddenly-collapse.html

Anonymous: Winter will eventually come your way. At this point, temperature averages are hazy.

Mike Pauklocsak said...

Hello Andrew.I just did.It didn't mention the Ohio area where i'm located getting snow.

peterbilt5000 said...

This big arctic cold snap, looks to be pretty short lived. My area has temps below average for 2 days then back into the 40s with no snow.

Mike Paulocsak said...

I think the best thing we can do here is focus on the pattern change, not the artic outbreaks. They usually don't last that long anyway. When the pattern change does take hold,i believe everyone will get some decent snow.Just a thought.

Andrew said...

Mike: I showed you it to so you could get a general overview of what may be to come so you might get an idea of what your area may see the rest of winter.

Peterbilt5000;The image above is for a progressively cold pattern, not in the next few days.

"Bitter" in this winter means average temperatures for 2 days then back to well above normal temperatures. So in this sense I agree with you yes.
