ECMWF/GFS Showing Polar Vortex Breaks, Cutoff Low Pattern to Return in Southwest

Both the 12z ECMWF and 12z GFS are showing a break in the polar vortex- a significant development that may lead to the much-anticipated pattern change. Another thing we're seeing in these 8-10 day height anomaly outlooks are trough patterns in the Southwest as well as offshore the Southeast. This means that the cutoff low pattern may return to the Southwest and bring some snowy weather to the Plains. Possibly. A lot has to be determined, but it does match up with my theory of cutoff lows returning.

I don't think the Ohio valley will recieve any snow at sll this year?Especially Columbus Ohio.

Anonymous: that is a false accusation. At some point snow will fall. I would also appreciate it if you would not bitter cast.

Hey anonymous.Have patience. It will come eventually this January.Your southwest of me.I live in Holmes county. They way i figure, all the rain we have seen in Ohio,we will eventually see a low from the southwest bring us heavy snow.Remember the march snowstorm we had,you got HAMMERED with 21" of snow from this storm. We have shattered rainfall records in Ohio.

Hi Andrew.I agree. We will get our share of snow in Ohio.Like i mentioned to anonymous,we have shattered rainfall records across the state of Ohio. Our snow will come sooner then we think.

Good morning Andrew.Happy new years eve. How's all the computer models looking for potential snow?

Your area could see some lake effect snow from the Great Lakes in the first week of January.

This is Reid speaking. I checked the current AO and it is now negative? Check it on the NOAA website!

kc man How do you see snow for Kansas City Missouri in January. I am in the snow removing business and I am setting on 250 ton of salt. I hope Jan-March we get our snows.

Andrew said...

Reid: That is an error. Apparently the AO website has been having some problems lately.

Ben: When the pattern flips around Mid January, snow should be falling soon after the pattern change. Snowfall should average around normal or slightly below normal. It's a toss up, as we don't know how big of a pattern change we will get in Mid January.

Hello Andrew. So basically what your saying is as soon as the pattern change takes hold, snow should start falling about a week or so after?I understand 100% it's hard to predict. The pattern looks like it's stuck.

Seeing as how the storm system looks to be very active, if the cold takes hold, I could see snow falling in a week's time.

*active storm track

Hello Andrew.I like that,ACTIVE STORM TRACK!!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Andrew. When the MJO enters phase 6,what does that mean?Good or bad for snow?

Andrew said...

Phase 6 brings a lot of precipitation into the Midwest and Ohio Valley, along with above normal temperatures.
